Oil pulling is another possibility for creating excellent oral health. This is as simple as swishing coconut oil through your teeth for 20 minutes (start at 5 or 10 minutes and gradually increase the time), or you can buy premade ayurvedic mouth oils to do the same thing. Some people even use simple olive oil for this process.
When buying premade oils, always be concerned about the quality of the oils used; food-grade, cold-pressed, organic oils are of the highest quality. When oils are combined with various herbal active ingredients, sometimes when tested by independent labs, these are found to contain toxins that are way above acceptable levels (e.g., arsenic and heavy metals).
I use organic, cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil for oil pulling or “swishing.” I like the taste, and it seems to work well for me. I put it in my mouth as a solid and hold it there until it turns into a liquid due to the heat inside the mouth. Then I usually swish for about 10-15 minutes. When you are finished swishing, make sure you spit the oil into the trash or maybe your garden outside. Please DO NOT put it down your sink. It could cause clogs over time. Don’t swallow it either, as it is filled with toxins, bacteria, and debris from your mouth, YUCK!

Want some other ideas to create a naturally healthy mouth and smile? Then maybe you are interested in buying or making natural toothpaste and mouthwash. Both are great ideas; let’s take a look at just how easy this is.
To create a simple tooth powder, you will need to gather up some basic ingredients: baking soda, stevia or xylitol, peppermint, or ground cinnamon and cloves. Each ingredient really does perform a different function. Clearly, the baking soda cleans and detoxifies the mouth, stevia or xylitol are sweet and improve the taste, peppermint is antibacterial and leaves your mouth feeling fresh, ground cinnamon and cloves will sanitize much like other ingredients, but in addition, they will help with issues of sensitivity and reactions to hot and cold. A benefit I personally have enjoyed a great deal.
Combine four rounded tablespoons of baking soda, 1/2 a teaspoon of ground cloves, and one teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a glass container that has a lid to seal it closed. Add the xylitol or stevia until the desired level of sweetness is reached. Feel free to adjust the amount of cinnamon and cloves to make it more palatable. Other natural options for detox teeth is to change the flavor would be peppermint essential oil or even a little natural cocoa powder.
You were looking for more toothpaste or cream that is natural? No problem, you can buy organic fluoride-free toothpaste or make some of your own. Making your own toothpaste is just as easy as combining the ingredients for the tooth powder; it also uses many of the same elements.
Allow ½ a cup of coconut oil to soften or melt it; make sure it doesn’t get too hot. Add three tablespoons of baking soda and about 15 drops of peppermint essential oil. Add enough stevia to sweeten the toothpaste; if you use packets, only add one at a time, mix and then perform a taste test. Additional ingredients can be added and useful for detox teeth, sensitive teeth, improved gum and tooth health like ground clove and cinnamon.
Mix thoroughly, then let it cool to a solid-state. Just scoop a little onto your toothbrush and clean your teeth. If the mixture gets hot, the ingredients may separate, mix it up and then get it someplace cool. A fridge or even a cooler would work to make it solid again.
Having fresh breath usually means a healthier mouth! Commercial mouthwash often contains ingredients that we don’t want, like alcohol and questionable ingredients called acidic stabilizing agents that can make it too acidic for mouth health, plus lots of artificial food dyes. Ouch and yuck! If you are still interested in having that fresh, clean mouth, don’t worry, you can safely and effectively do this safely.
I scoured the internet looking for something a little more fun than just my normal filtered water and baking soda regime. It works, but it isn’t exactly tasty or inspiring. So why not try something like this.
Use either 1 cup of filtered or distilled water; combine with one slightly rounded tablespoon of baking soda and a few drops of essential oils for the benefits they provide. If you are looking for something a little sweeter, go ahead and add some stevia to the mix, it is extremely sweet, and stevia is safe for your teeth as it doesn’t mess up the acidity levels in your mouth that contribute to cavity formation.
Having read this far means you really are concerned about your oral health, so you can start with some small changes and see how much your teeth and gums thank you. A healthy mouth is linked to a person’s overall health; the Mayo Clinic called oral health, “a window to your overall health.”
